9.0 Earthquake That Shocked Japan: The Trauma Induced with the Survivors
Japan's 9.0 earthquake took place on March 11, 2011, followed by an unstoppable tsunami. It is estimated that at least 20 thousand are deceased or missing. Those that have survived this tragedy are now dealing with many other challenges such as the emotional trauma, coping difficulties, physical ailments, financial stresses, lack of provisions, and more. As stated by some foremost psychologists, most people will adjust to their life after the earthquake, yet while others will encounter harsh psychological issues.
The ones with a high degree of psychological risk are the survivors with:
- A mental or mood disorder like Major Depression that was a pre-existing condition
- None or very little established support network
- Trauma from the past that has gone untreated or is unresolved
- Psychological disorders that have gone untreated
- Hindered or a lack of coping skills
Common experiences of survivors post disaster, like what hit Japan, include:
--Feelings of unreality
--Mood swings
--Difficulty sleeping
--Disruption in normal eating habits
--Being on edge
--Extra sensitivity to the triggers of trauma, like an aftershock
--Shock
In Japan's history, it was the 1995 Kobe earthquake that instituted the first organized psychiatric trauma response effort. After the earthquake in Japan in 2011, there were teams of psychiatric personnel that were been sent out to assist the needy. However, the main priority of the relief effort by the mental health professionals have been to address the physical needs before taking on the mental health needs. It is typical for survivors of a major disaster who find themselves in need of basic physical resources (such as food, shelter, etc) to be unable to work through their emotional turmoil. Even with all of the relief efforts that have been launched, it is most likely that the psychological symptoms of the survivors will continue for years.
The fact that the people of Japan are community driven and have strong Family Values are both advantages in their efforts to rebuild. Both physical and psychological healing is necessary for those affected and may very well be expedited by their emphasis on community support and teamwork. For other societies who may be lacking, Japan's efforts in implementing effective support networks can serve as a model to duplicate. Especially if one's survival may one day depend on it.
