Advances in 2D Animation

As a kid Saturday morning cartoons ruled my weekends. I grew up with He-Man, Batman, Loony Toons, Smurfs, and even Care Bears (though I hate to admit it). I was fascinated with the stories and I loved the quality 2D animations. Those days were classic. However, animation has come a long way with the advent of computers. Computers allow 2D animation projects to be produced faster, they make it easier to share the workload, and easier to distribute.

Easier Drawing

Computers make cartoons so much easier to produce, that cartoonists can produce a 2D animation in much less time and produce more content in that time. Programs such as flash allow cartoonists to produce cartoons very quickly. When 2D animations were all drawn by hand a cartoon could have taken weeks if not months to produce. Now a 2D animation can be produced in a matter of days, if not hours. This allows the animator to produce more content for their viewer to enjoy. This can be harder for the cartoonist in some instances because they don't have as much time to be creative as they normally might.

If a cartoonist realizes that they have made a mistake they have to throw all of the frames that have the mistake away. Editing a cartoon is easier on the computer because the cartoonist doesn't have to throw all of the old work away. If a computer illustrator makes a mistake, they can simply edit the elements of the cartoon instead of having to throw the whole thing away. This is particularly useful when music is used in a cartoon. Usually music has to be created after then cartoon is drawn. With 2D animation a computer animator can change the animation so easily that the cartoon can be created to the music instead of the other way around.

Share the workload

2D animation on the computer makes it easier to share the work load among several computer animators. Each animator can take a small piece of the animation to work on, such as the background or an individual character. Then, the parts can then be easily combined to create the 2D animation. Because the parts can be saved, they can even be used in several animations. Some companies like, Cartoon Solutions, even sell the pieces of a 2D animation in character packs that give you all of the parts and pieces that you need to be able animate a character. The ability to reuse parts speeds up production significantly.

Easier Distribution

A 2D animation created with computer animation technologies can be distributed through a variety of media formats. They can be put on the internet or emailed. They can be made to be broadcast on TV or even put on a DVD. An animation studio can reach more people by using several types of media.

Animation has changed from pen and paper to computer animation. They are now easier to produce, the parts can be reused and new distribution channels have been opened up. It is safe to say that 2D animation has been greatly diversified because of computers.
