Impossible? $27.95 In Nonplussed! , popular-math writer Julian Havil delighted readers with a mind-boggling array of implausible yet true mathematical paradoxes. Now Havil is back with Impossible? , another marvelous medley of the utterly confusing, profound, and unbelievable–and all of it mathematically irrefutable. Whenever Forty-second Street in New York is temporarily closed, traffic doesn’t gridlock but flows more smoothly–why is that? Or consider that cities that build new roads can experience dramatic increases in traffic congestion–how is this possible? What does the game show Let’s Make A Deal reveal about the unexpected hazards of decision-making? What can the game of cricket teach us about the surprising behavior of the law of averages? These are some of the counterintuitive mathematical occurrences that readers encounter in Impossible? Havil ventures further than ever into territory where intuition can lead one astray. He gathers entertaining problems from probability and statistics along with an eclectic variety of conundrums and puzzlers from other areas of mathematics, including classics of abstract math like the Banach-Tarski paradox. These problems range in difficulty from easy to highly challenging, yet they can be tackled by anyone with a background in calculus. And the fascinating history and personalities associated with many of the problems are included with their mathematical proofs. Impossible? will delight anyone who wants to have their reason thoroughly confounded in the most astonishing and unpredictable ways. |

The Impossible Advantage $34.95 Conventional business strategies tell you that differentiation, the right positioning, and defining your superior edge will turn you into the ‘best player’ in your market – but this is wrong. The Impossible Advantage reveals that success can be achieved by changing the market in which you operate, rather than trying to beat the competition.  The authors illustrate that the biggest, most spectacular and groundbreaking business success stories feature companies that make the rules – instead of just following them. The best companies seem to know how to break, change, or reinvent the rules of the market that everyone else follows. This book: Will help you to break through to an entirely new level of thinking: winning the game by changing the rules in your own favour. Explains that you don’t need a technological breakthrough, product innovation or a massive marketing budget to change the rules of the competition. Shows you that you can become a ′game changer′ and gain a seemingly ‘impossible’ advantage even over far larger competitors, no matter how large your market or how small your segment is. Introduces you to four compelling ‘Game Changing Strategies’ that work for managers from any industry or business sector. Video Games Vs Movies, Is It The End Of The Silver Screen
Video games vs movies? Of course we do not have to discuss that the video game industry has taken a big part of the movie industry revenue. Hollywood is facing more and more competition as video games become more and more like movies. Will the sliver screen era come to an end now?
Is Hollywood doomed to go under? If you has to choose what would it be? Which one: video games vs movies? Video games give you a sense of power. Games like Call Of Duty Modern Warfare make you feel like your own movie hero saving the world from the bad guys. Video games give you power over the story itself. Now video games give me a feeling of power and excitement and that is hard to resist?
The dilemma for the movie industry is that a lot of games gives the player hours if not hundreds of hours of game play. So when do the gamers have time to go to a movie?
But all is not lost for the movies. Look at is this way: when movies came out back in the day, people actually thought that would be the end of reading. People thought that would be the end of movies, when TV came out. Once more when the nasty video game hit the market, yes people thought that would be the end of TV.
None of this has happened. How come? It is simple: the more people have the more people want. Developers try to put as many stores as they can, into the same mall because more stores means more costumers.
Video games vs movies? Don't try and compare them they are two different things. Video games are active, movies are more passive.
They both offer different experiences, for different times of day and moods. Being active is not always for me. Playing video games is becoming like sports. Traditionally movies are passive experiences, the light is reflected from the movie screen into your eyes, like the moon light. Movies are a chance to sit back relax and enjoy a story, like in the days of yore when we would sit under the moon light and tell a story. Sometimes I want to be the best I can be, a hero, that is what a video game gives me.
Now the real problem is not that video games are better than movies, its getting those gamers into the cinema again, and the way they do this by creating gimmicks like real 3D, or combining the film concept with a video game release. Will video games kill the movie industry? No. But less cinemas might be built with more and more people will not leave the comfort of our home because of VOD. In my opinion one of the best movie style video games of all time is the great game: Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2

...Nothing Major $1.02 Bob Cayne co-hosted "Talking Golf" a weekly radio show with Cleveland golf writer George Sweda. At first, it was impossible to promote the show without overselling it. So they didn't. They opted for promos like: "Hi, this is Jack Nicklaus. I've won my share of majors and I have to tell you, 'Talking Golf' with George Sweda and Bob Cayne is nothing major."Jack and Arnold, Gary, Fuzzy and Nancy (the generation that spiked the game's popularity) and dozens of others chipped in. Their engaging personalities and favorite golf stories became the nucleus for this book. Bob has taken it several steps further with interviews, essays and the ability to laugh at himself. That's just the beginning of the story. Bob could tell you about the day Gary Player rode on the back of a hippie's Harley trying to make a starting time. But wouldn't you rather buy the book? With a title like '...Nothing Major,' can you be disappointed?" |
