Many parents feel as thought there is no common ground with their teenagers. Some children go from being cooperative and eager to please to surly and rebellious almost overnight. While other teenagers simply discontinue all communications with their parents which can be difficult as aparent to understand this is when new strategies become necessary.

Don't lose control this is a mistake too many parents make often. If you react too emotionally when your teen says or does something wrong you are only acting like they are rather than as an adult should. Whether you realize it or not many of these behaviors are simply cries for guidance. Deep breathing can be an angry parents saving grace, don't forget to breath before you react to your teen. Whenever possible put some distance between your child and yourself. You need to be on a more even keel before you resume a discussion unless your teen is going to do something dangerous. When it comes to parenting teens it's important that you be the mature one. It is most important when parenting teenagers that you set a good example for them. This may seem obvious but you might be surprise how many parents don't practice what they preach. For example if teenagers see their parents getting drunk or high, they are not likely to follow their advice to avoid this behavior. It's the same with cursing. So set the example you want them to follow.

You must be the parent. You must make sure that your teenager hears you when you say you love and care for them even when they've made a poor decision. If you have to ground them do it from a neutral state rather than a state of anger. Don't nit pick the rules, pick the important ones to stick by. They need to know that the rules are for the safety of all involved and not just because you are angry with them. You must keep the position as a parent who wants what is best for their child but also one who loves that child unconditionally. This is no easy task but it is one we must tackle. You can watch your teen grow into a budding adult despite the difficult moments. We all go through it, it's an adjustment for everyone involved.
