Old Time Radio From The Screen Guild Theater

For years, the Screen Guild Theater was known as the top variety show in Hollywood. Never before had so many famous personalities featured all in one show. Between the years of 1939 and 1952, the show ran in many forms.

The show began as a charity. Most of the stars that appeared on the show donated their wages from it to Motion Picture Relief Fund. All in all the stars raised more than $800,000 to help build the Motion Picture Country House.

The purpose of the House was to help retired movie stars that may have become poor or very frail have somewhere safe and confortable to stay. The mission of the show to raise money for fellow actors surely fueled the desire of Hollywood's biggest stars to appear.

From its inception in 1939 the show was hosted by George Murphy. Following that, Roger Pryor took the reigns in 1940. Old Time Radio adaptations of the movies of the day soon replaced the initial show format. It starred most of the big name Hollywood celebrities of the time.

Notable guest stars ranged from Bing Crosby and George Burns to Marlene Dietrich and Gracie Allen. While the show became wildly popular, it wasn't always so.

In its first production year, the show did not have the best fit. And while it had big stars, it seemed that those stars weren't enough to make it successful. The introduction of a new host Roger Pryor helped to smooth it out and make it into something worth listening to.

It was dropped by its sponsor, Gulf in 1942 because of problems in the oil industry during the time of World War II. However, it didn't take long to find a new sponsor. So Lady Esther started sponsoring the show and with it a new format was introduced.

During this time, many successful films were re-versioned as Old Time Radio shows. Film scripts were edited down to last around 25 minutes for the radio. The likes of Humphrey Bogart and Betty Davis were just some of the top-flight Hollywood stars to appear on the show. Anyone famous eventually starred on the Screen Guild Theater show.

The Screen Guild Theater lasted until 1952 when it finally aired its last show. Despite it no longer broadcasting live, many recordings of the show were kept. Over 200 of these shows from the Golden Age of Radio are available to listen. As far as old time radio shows went, the Screen Guild Theater was massively successful and appealing.
