Silver Dagger winner Giles Blunt delivers an exhilarating game of cat and mouse with a most unlikely—and likeable—pair of thieves Eight years ago, Owen Maxwell was saved from a foster home by the arrival of his uncle Max from England. Once a promising Shakespearean actor, Magnus “Max” Maxwell has since put his dramatic skills to new use: a master of disguise, a virtuoso of foreign dialects, and a performer to his core, he has become an extremely successful gentleman thief. Every summer, Max and Owen take a road trip across the United States, pulling off elaborate robberies along the way. But this year is different. Their first, dazzlingly executed summer heist captures the interest of the Subtractors. Long believed an urban myth, the Subtractors are a gang of vicious thieves who prey on other thieves. They will abduct a fellow crook known to have completed a lucrative job and proceed to “subtract” parts of his body until he tells them where they can find the loot. “No such creature,” Max says, when Owen first suspects that they may be in the Subtractors’ sights. But in this, as in so many things, Max will prove to be disastrously wrong.

Brock Brower’s National Book Award-nominated novel traces the making of a horror movie in Hollywood. Simon Moro, a 68-year-old star, is making his last picture, a low-budget remake of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven . Moro, infuriated by the bland horror movies of his day, sees his own career–even as it ends– as an ongoing effort to wallop the public with an overwhelming moral shock. And he succeeds when an elaborate publicity stunt turns into a gruesome and grand personal statement. As Moro’s life reels toward its macabre end, it also reels backward through lies and evasions to show its surprising beginning. Underneath his Frankensteinian exaggeration, Moro has a vivid and humane story to tell, even as the coffins break open and dark, erotic secrets are revealed. Brock Brower has taken the horror film in all its gory glory to create a book that recycles pop material into literature, creating a Dickensian tale of America.

Medical Care For Pets Is Every Bit As Advanced As Cures For Humans, But There Are Some Things That Just Will Not Work For Every Creature

New procedures in medical science can be just as beneficial to animals as they are for humans, and in the 21st Century there are numerous ways of treating health problems that only affect particular animals as well as which occur in many different species. Veterinary surgeons are trained to complete as many different procedures on animals as can be performed on humans, and the standard of studying they do is just as complicated as a surgeon who treats humans.

Obviously, there are a number of differences in the type of treatments given. There are unlikely to be too many otherwise healthy humans who expect anyone to assist them with clipping their toe-nails (though having working alongside a podiatrist, you would be surprised at how many folk don’t think that they should take reasonable care of their own feet!). Whereas this simple procedure is regularly required for animals who do not make use of their claws sufficiently in a cage to keep them short enough to be able to walk comfortably, when in their natural area of habitation they would easily keep worn down to a safe level.

Maybe the type of surgery most people have heard of is that of neutering cats and dogs to prevent unwanted kittens and puppies or behaviour which is considered anti-social by us. There are various operations which come under the description of neutering and of course the procedure for male and female animals differs considerably.

There are different attitudes applied to veterinary procedures mostly dependent on whether the animal is a household pet or household pet, almost any treatment will surely be decided upon as long as the owner is happy to pay for it. Sometimes the cost can be outrageous, in particular for a very old animal which may very well not survive an anaesthetic, but the decision will always be in the hands of the owner, although the vet will explain in detail what risks there are.

On the other hand, for a farm animal the decision to carry out treatment will usually be based on business considerations, and there is little possibility of complex surgery being carried out on one sheep from a flock or one cow out of the herd, as the outlay will be more than the commercial value of the animal.

In recent decades, laser treatments have become increasingly popular for animals. Much the same as such treatment for humans, the idea of using a Laser eye beam to vaporise the part of the body that needs treating is a good one, and for exactly the same reasons. There is a lot less likelihood of infection when using laser treatment, a reduction in pain or swelling, very little bleeding compared to regular surgery and of course, with a highly accurate Laser eye aimed at the area to be treated, the surgeon doesn’t have to see behind surgical instruments and naturally has a better view of what is happening.

Of course, as was mentioned earlier, not all laser treatments are any use to animals. In a similar way as we wouldn’t need to have our toenails cut, it’s not really likely that any animal would qualify for Laser eye surgery. Although some eye problems are dealt with for animals, for example cataracts and glaucoma, it’s very unlikely that an animal would be diagnosed as being short or long sighted, which are the eye issues for humans which are most often treated by Laser eye surgery.

From years of experience as a cat owner, I am aware that tooth and gum complaints are another common ailment, and both felines and canines often undergo similar dental treatment to humans, including tooth removal, root canal treatment and the clearance of excess plaque. I’m not sure we’ll ever reach the situation where we’ll be providing dogs and cats with bleaching trays to whiten their teeth though. (Although I expect that there probably are some pampered pets in Hollywood which might just have been made to have this kind of cosmetic treatment!)

Obviously, the same as humans, there are a lot more complex problems that can occur, but veterinary science is very much as advanced as human science, so it’s realistic to say that most ailments encountered by household pets can be dealt with every bit as well as if it were a human problem.

Nick's life was perfect. He was a successful businessman-and just as successful with the ladies. He had everything he wished, or so he thought. Then a lovely magical creature shook up his world and made him rethink what he valued.Amira wanted only one thing-to escape the curse of the djinn. She had served many selfish masters through the millennia. Her hope was that one day a Master would discover the way to give her freedom. Her new Master was a shock. He was darkly handsome, just like her long-dead lover Omar. However, it didn't take long for Nick to show his true colors as a charming but uncommitted playboy. But Amira gradually discovers admirable qualities in her Master, in spite of his self-centered lifestyle. Maybe it was Nick's physical similarity to Omar that drew her so strongly to him, but she isn't content to play out the typical djinn/Master role. Amira is determined to teach her Master there is more to life than physical lust and fulfillment.Every time Nick makes a wish, Amira twists it in surprising ways. Although irritated at his beautiful genie for her tricks, he becomes more drawn to her sweet nature. Each wish he asks for is filled with hot women and wild sex-wishes most men would consider a dream come true. But Nick soon finds himself desiring just one woman's love-his genie.
