A Covert Affair $11.81 Bestselling author Jennet Conant brings us a stunning account of Julia and Paul Child’s experiences as members of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) in the Far East during World War II and the tumultuous years when they were caught up in the McCarthy Red spy hunt in the 1950s and behaved with bravery and honor. It is the fascinating portrait of a group of idealistic men and women who were recruited by the citizen spy service, slapped into uniform, and dispatched to wage political warfare in remote outposts in Ceylon, India, and China. The eager, inexperienced 6 foot 2 inch Julia springs to life in these pages, a gangly golf-playing California girl who had never been farther abroad than Tijuana. Single and thirty years old when she joined the staff of Colonel William Donovan, Julia volunteered to be part of the OSS’s ambitious mission to develop a secret intelligence network across Southeast Asia. Her first post took her to the mountaintop idyll of Kandy, the headquarters of Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten, the supreme commander of combined operations. Julia reveled in the glamour and intrigue of her overseas assignment and lifealtering romance with the much older and more sophisticated Paul Child, who took her on trips into the jungle, introduced her to the joys of curry, and insisted on educating both her mind and palate. A painter drafted to build war rooms, Paul was a colorful, complex personality. Conant uses extracts from his letters in which his sharp eye and droll wit capture the day-to-day confusion, excitement, and improbability of being part of a cloak- and-dagger operation. When Julia and Paul were transferred to Kunming, a rugged outpost at the foot of the Burma Road, they witnessed the chaotic end of the war in China and the beginnings of the Communist revolution that would shake the world. A Covert Affair chronicles their friendship with a brilliant and eccentric array of OSS agents, including Jane Foster, a wealthy, free-spirited artist, and Elizabeth MacDonald, an adventurous young reporter. In Paris after the war, Julia and Paul remained close to their intelligence colleagues as they struggled to start new lives, only to find themselves drawn into a far more terrifying spy drama. Relying on recently unclassified OSS and FBI documents, as well as previously unpublished letters and diaries, Conant vividly depicts a dangerous time in American history, when those who served their country suddenly found themselves called to account for their unpopular opinions and personal relationships. |

GPS stands for Global Positioning System and it comes in a very handy device known as GPS Tracking Device which can be attached to a vehicle or individual you want to track.
Many people are fond of using this device since it serves a lot of purposes. Here are some of them:
* Keep An Eye On Kids
A number of parents use these devices to keep track of their family. As they can't permanently be there for their kids 24/7, they need something to assure them that their child is in good hands. It proves to be very useful especially when their kid is out camping or mountain climbing with other children.
* Spy on people
Did you know that many policemen and investigators are now using the GPS tracking appliance to watch their targets? It would be extremely chancy and noticeable if they keep following these people around to gather information on their exact location and activities.

If you love spying on your buddies, a GPS tracking device is just what you require. You can surprise them every now and then. They'll start wondering how you are able to know where they are at a specific period of time. They'll be surprised too to find out that you've recorded every detail of their activities. So where can you stick this gadget without any person knowing it? Those who want to track a vehicle would usually prefer putting it in a car's fender. Others would place it in the dashboard or the wheel. In spite of this, the best thing to do is go for a test drive with your GPS tracking device and identify the safest place to plant it, specially in area that received the least impact during bumps.
On the other hand, if you want to use it to track a person like your child for example, you can have your children wear a watch or use a telephone outfitted with a GPS tracker. This way, you can keep your eye on your child even if you're miles away from each other.
The majority of GPS tracking devices use lithium or rechargeable batteries that can last for days. A detector blinks once you're running on low battery and have to recharge. Most devices have memory of up to 2GB so you can record all you want.
One can easily gather information using the GPS tracking appliance by means of a text to your mobile. This in turn displays the location of your target in a map backdrop like the one used in google map. You can now watch where your target is headed as well as his or her activities.
Though useful, many countries ban the use of a GPS tracking device as a sign of recognition to a person's privacy. However, if you're working for the government or a licensed private detective agency you can use such appliance in work-related instances.

1953 Iranian Coup D'Etat $72.99 The 1953 Iranian coup d'état deposed the democratically elected government of Iranian Prime Minister Mohammed Mosaddeq. The United States' Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) overthrew the government of the popular Prime Minister Mosaddeq at the request of, and with minor support from the British government. In what the CIA called Operation Ajax, the U.S. enabled Mohammed Reza Pahlevi to become an all-powerful monarch, who went on to rule Iran with an iron fist for 26 years until he was overthrown in 1979. Two years earlier, in 1951, Mosaddeq, backed by his nationalist supporters in the Iranian parliament and throughout Iran, had angered Britain with his argument that Iran should begin profiting from its vast oil reserves instead of allowing profits to continue to flow to Britain. In 1951, Iran's Parliament, the Majlis, nationalized Iran's oil industry and then elected Mosaddeq to be prime minster. Since 1913, the oil industry in Iran had been controlled exclusively by the British government-controlled Anglo- Iranian Oil Company, the UK's single largest overseas investment. The ejection of the British staff of the Anglo- Iranian Oil Company (AIOC) from the now nationalized refineries in Iran triggered the Abadan Crisis, bringing the UK and Iran close to war.[8] Britain accused Mosaddeq of violating the legal rights of the AIOC and mobilized a worldwide boycott of Iran's oil that plunged Iran into financial crisis. The British government tried to enlist the United States in planning a coup, but President Harry S. Truman refused. His successor, Dwight D. Eisenhower, however, allowed the CIA to embark on its first covert operation against a foreign government. |
