Explore Free College Info Through English Composition And Begin Your Degree

College level courses are founded on a few basics that every student must take, including college algebra, the earth and biological sciences, social sciences, and of course, English composition. Once a student has made the decision to go to college, they have already been reading and writing for a close to a decade and a half or more, depending on their age. Even though they might have years of reading and writing, English composition teaches students how to more effectively communicate using the written word, teaching lessons that will be used for decades to come.

Throughout a student’s college experience, the bulk of communication between student and professor will be written. Students must be able to analyze, criticize, and create ideas using written communication in every major, from mathematical theory to history and more. Professors depend on a student’s ability to communicate in writing their ideas and thoughts in order to move them forward so they can graduate.

English composition is usually a required class beginning in freshman year. Students begin learning several basic concepts regarding reading literature and writing expository essays. An expository essay is an essay in which the writer is trying to explain or inform the reader regarding a particular idea. Usually, before students begin writing long essays they will take a period of time to read literary works like poetry and fiction to help them understand ideas like elements of literature.

Literature is explained in English composition using terms of literary elements. The elements form together to create a unified theme or idea. Examples of literary elements that students will be taught in English composition are plot, character development, narration, and symbolism. Authors use these elements to create a feeling of a time, place, or situation that helps the reader understand a cohesive narrative.

Once a student has a basic understanding of literary elements, they will start to write expository essays on the literature they are reading in class. The instructor will teach them how to create a thesis, or a main idea, and then how to clearly explain it in writing. They will use literary elements to explain their ideas, as well as other techniques such as quotations from the source, theoretical ideas, illustrations, and do so in a particular style.

In English composition, students will learn how to create a good essay mechanically and grammatically. That means the student will create concise sentences using proper grammar, and develop thoughts and ideas that transition easily from one paragraph to the next. They will learn how to quote from primary sources and to create a works cited page using those sources.

Once a student has mastered English composition, those lessons will certainly be applicable to every other course a student takes in which he or she must write a paper. Although the subject matter will vary from literary themes, the basic elements of research, idea development, and grammatical and mechanical correctness will easily translate into a successful paper whether it’s a research paper in biology or political science. Clarity of thought and idea development is paramount for academic success, because good ideas cannot be understood if they are not communicated clearly.

Being able to write well is a skill that employers are constantly looking for. Employers don’t even want to look at resumes or cover letters that have grammatical errors or that are unclear in goals or thought process. Employers need skilled writers from entry-level hires to those who have reached upper management; successful companies aren’t successful if they can’t communicate, and that means being able to write well.

Learning how to communicate effectively will be a skill that will come into play in nearly every profession. Taking college English writing gets a student started on a required class, allowing them to navigate all other classes with greater ease. You'll discover how free college education will help in every phase of education.
